Robert J. Duffett, Esquire is a partner in the firm and has an active trial practice. He appears regularly in the state courts of all Northern Virginia jurisdictions and has successfully argued before the Virginia Supreme Court. He emphasizes his practice in litigation with a focus on leasing issues relating to landlord-tenant disputes and the drafting and review of commercial and residential leases. He represents numerous landlords and property management firms in the Northern Virginia area and is a landlord himself.
Mr. Duffett is a frequent speaker on landlord-tenant law. Some of the organizations he has addressed include the Northern Virginia Association of Realtors, the Northern Virginia Apartment Association, The Virginia Sheriff?s Civil Enforcement Association, The Alexandria Landlord-Tenant Relations Board, and the Northern Virginia Chapter of the National Association of Residential Property Managers. He has been a featured speaker at continuing legal education seminars relating to both commercial and residential leasing issues and is the editor of the Virginia Landlord®, a newsletter dedicated to protecting the rights of Virginia's landlords.
Mr. Duffett received his B.S. in business with a concentration in finance from Indiana University and his J.D. from the T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond, Virginia. He is a member of the Virginia State Bar, the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association and the Northern Virginia Apartment Association. Since 1999, Mr. Duffett has served as a Commissioner on the City of Falls Church Housing Commission and served as Chairman of the Commission in 2003. He also was elected and currently serves as an Owner Board Member of the Northern Virginia Apartment Association. In addition, Mr. Duffett serves on the Northern Virginia Apartment Association?s legislative committee and is active in monitoring legislation affecting landlords.
Mr. Duffett was born in Alexandria, Virginia and grew up in Northern Virginia. He currently resides in Falls Church, Virginia.
Virginia Landlord Year End Review Dinner. Every January, Mr. Duffett presents the popular Virginia Landlord Year In Review Dinner which provides landlords and property managers an opportunity to keep abreast of the legal landscape effecting Virginia?s landlords by attending a casual evening seminar. The dinner provides landlords and property managers a straight forward summary of: (1) All Virginia Supreme Court decisions affecting landlords from the previous year. (2) Relevant Virginia Circuit Court decisions affecting landlords from around the state from the previous year. (3) Key legislation enacted by the General Assembly in the previous year affecting landlords and a summary of relevant pending legislation. (4) Provides an opportunity for Virginia landlords and property managers to socialize and exchange landlording tips.
